What is the medication safety check?

The Medication Safety Check identifies potential drug interactions or unsuitability of medications for patients. This information is important for nursing staff when medication is added to or removed from the medication plan.

You will find information on the risk of interactions in a display above the medication plan.

There are 5 different risk levels:

1. No risk

2. Information available: Supplementary information only, no action required

3. Moderate risk: Interactions known, but only medium risk

4. Moderate to high risk: Interactions known at medium to high risk

5. High risk: Interactions known, at high risk

More detailed information on the interactions, suitability and other warnings of the medication can be found in the Medication safety check field.

This is located 4 fields to the right of the medication plan.

Here you will find the following information:

  • Interactions: Details on the interactions of the medication

  • Double medication: Taking two medications that contain the same active ingredient / have the same effect. This can lead to an undesirable increased effect.

  • QT time prolongation: Substances that prolong the QT time can add up in their effect on the heart rhythm. The severity of the effect depends on the extent of the effects on the QT interval of the individual active substances.

  • Priscus plus: Drugs that have been classified as unsuitable for patients aged 65 and over.

Important:

If in doubt, you should always consult your doctor or pharmacy before making any changes to a patient's therapy.
